From DPW:

The Fitchburg Department of Public Works is pleased to announce the next phase of debris clean-up from the October Nor’easter.  Phase 1, Emergency Clearance, was accomplished during the weeks following the storm and involved opening of roadways to full width to allow access for emergency vehicles and general traffic. In addition, hanging limbs suspended over roadways were removed because they were potential safety hazards. This work was performed by DPW crews and by private contractors that were hired via emergency spending approved by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

Phase 2, Debris Removal, will be performed by DPW because there is a limited amount of storm debris in the city. Also, it is not yet known if expenditures for private contractors would be reimbursable, as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is still evaluating the extent of damage in Worcester County.  The goal is to remove remaining debris from the sides of the roadways before winter sets in.

DPW will pick up debris from curbside between November 28 and the end of December.  The end of the pick-up period is subject to change, depending on weather conditions and amount of debris that is encountered. Please note the following:

  • Debris on private property is the responsibility of the property owner per FEMA.
  • Private debris can be hauled by Fitchburg residents to the DPW staging area on Crawford Street (between the bridge over the Nashua River and Wass-Arthur Signs) on weekdays between 7:30 A.M. and 2:00 P.M.
  • The public should avoid parking in front of debris piles in a manner that would prevent crews from being able to remove the debris.
  • Debris that is placed at the curb after November 27 might not be picked up, as there will be no additional passes made through the city for debris pick-up.
