 About Fitchburg Police Department

The Fitchburg Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency with law enforcement responsibilities for 28 square miles and 192 miles of public road. The department responds to over 40,000 incidents each year, while addressing the needs of a population of approximately 44,000 people in Central Massachusetts.

The City of Fitchburg is governed by a Mayor and an 11 member city council form of government. The Fitchburg Police Department consists of 73 sworn law enforcement officers supported by 5 non-sworn personnel.

The Fitchburg Police Department in 2009 flattens the organization by having more direct reports to the Chief of Police office. This allows for a more immediate response to issues in the community and from other city officials. An example of this is the traffic officer. Issues relating to traffic always have been a priority to residents as well as the majority of individuals traveling through out city. Today when a complaint or request for a traffic study or signage is needed in a specific area, the Chief speaks directly with the officer that will be handling the request, thus reducing the chances of the request being diluted. This change in the organization has proven to be worthy of said change.

We still have the Operations Division, which controls all line functions of the police department, including the patrol division.

The Operations Commander of the Uniformed Patrol Divisions, of Captain Rank, shall exercise control over all its members.  He shall be held responsible for the accomplishment of the police mission through the operations division of the police department.

In his role as Operations Commander, he shall perform such tasks of an administrative or investigative nature as directed by the Chief of Police.Subject to the Direction of the Chief of Police, he shall assign his force to motor patrol, motorcycle patrol, bicycle patrol, foot patrol, intersection point traffic posts, relief duty, headquarters posts or other investigative functions or special operations.

Staff Services which plans coordinates and provides all administrative support for the proper and efficient administration of the police department as well as Technical Services which also plans, coordinates and provides the logistical support necessary for the proper and efficient operation of the police department, are now shared responsibility by both the Deputy Chief and Chief's office.
