The Fitchburg Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency with law enforcement responsibilities for 28 square miles and 192 miles of public road. The department responds to over 40,000 incidents each year, while addressing the needs of a population of approximately 40,000 people in Central Massachusetts.
The City of Fitchburg is governed by a Mayor and an 11 member city council form of government. The Fitchburg Police Department consists of 90 sworn law enforcement officers supported by 19 non-sworn personnel.
The Fitchburg Police Department consists of three divisions; they are the Operations Division, the Staff Services Division and the Technical Services Division.
Operation Division - controls all line functions of the police department, including the patrol division, criminal investigations, drug enforcement and control, and traffic regulation and investigations.
Staff Services Division - plans, coordinates and provides all administrative support for the proper and efficient administration of the police department. Staff Services provides inspection for all departmental units and functions. It conducts internal affairs investigations, administers all training programs and acts as the human resource unit for the police department.
Technical Services Division - plans, coordinates and provides the logistical support necessary for the proper and efficient operation of the police department. This includes building, automotive, communication, electronic documentary and archival storage, and equipment maintenance and replacement.
