Purpose & Responsibilities
The purpose of the Council on Aging (COA) is to provide advocacy for and to coordinate and or carry out programs designed to meet the needs of the aging in living dignified and independent lives. The Council’s primary responsibilities are to design, promote, and implement programs to address the identified needs of the community’s elder population and to coordinate existing services in the community.
Additionally the COA oversees the Fitchburg Senior Center at the Old Fitchburg Armory. The COA works in concert with public and private agencies and providers in the area, and with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs. The commission shall exercise all the powers and duties of Councils of Aging under the General Laws Chapter 40 Section 8B, subject to the provisions of Chapter 3 Article 14 of the Fitchburg City Code.
The COA is comprised of 12 volunteer residents. Each volunteer serves a three year term. Volunteers are appointed by the Mayor and subject to confirmation by the City Council.
